In the short story "the haunted house" the author did many things to build suspense, relate the setting to the plot, and relate the setting to the characters in the story. One way he did this is by telling the reader about the large amounts of loneliness he was feeling while walking around in the dreary night by himself and explaining how the darkness gave him the chills every time he thought he heard something it would spook him, and how every moment in the story made you wonder what was going to happen next while he was near the haunted house. The setting related to the plot by having the story take place in the night time on a cold and windy day, a day that seemed darker, and much scarier than any other day or night. While it just so happens that after the tragedy occurred he was stuck by the haunted house just by himself, or so he thought. Lastly the stories setting did not relate to the stories characters that well for the main characters stand point has he was a good guy and didn’t mean any harm, but the story was more of a scary, bad guy setting that made you think something bad was going to happen, and sure enough something bad did happen. But the people who captured the man related to the story very well has they were the bad guys of the story that came out of nowhere to capture the man.
The three forms of figurative language used in the short story “at Sea” are Personification, Onomatopoeia, and a. Personification is used in the story when the author, Guy De Maupassant says “The trawling smack is the ideal fishing boat. So solidly built it fears no weather.” I believe the author used this because he was trying to explain how the boat could supposedly handle anything. The portrayal of the boat helped the explanation of the setting by letting the reader know that the weather isn't very good as they are about to set sail. The author uses an onomatopoeia when the young javels arm gets caught in the fish net and he describes how he screams and weeps in pain has is arm gets caught in the net and begins to bleed. Also it is used when he pours the salt water over the stub of his arm after he cuts it off. When explaining that the arm was caught and bleeding everywhere I thought it foreshadowed the story because you knew they were going to have to do something to the man’s arm. Lastly the author uses a
The theme of the story "the use of force" is that you shouldn't hide things from people even if the thing you are hiding is bad. An example of this is when the little girl goes to the doctor to check and see if she has a disease that has had a sudden out break and people need to be checked. So when it is her turn to get checked and the doctor tries to get her to open her mouth, she won't do it. The little girl continually denies that she has the disease and won't open her mouth for the doctor to check because she doesn't want anyone to know that she has the infection in her mouth. The doctor continues to find and attempt different ways to get her to open her mouth, but still the little girl denies she has it and won't budge. So, eventually the doctor decides to get people to hold her down and then he would open her mouth and check. But even at this attempt the little girl still kicked and screamed as she did not want to get checked out by this doctor. Eventually, the doctor did get to check her and find out she did have the disease. But, all this could of been prevented if the little girl wouldn't of kept it a secret and would have just cooperated with the doctor. Which would of made everything so much easier and this story wouldn't of been written.
In the story "the Cactus" The main character Trysdale is sitting alone in his apartment thinking and talking to himself about the little green plant sitting in the window sill, the cactus. Wondering why it is there and what the meaning of it is. Trysdale then leaves and goes to a wedding for a girl he once dated and found one of his friends who was a captain; the man’s name was carruthers. Carruthers and trysdale then talked about the love of his life, who he left long ago and was now getting married. The captain talked to him for quite a while, asking all sorts of questions and wondering why he left her, and what happened to them during the relationship. Trysdale tries to explain the things he did and why he left her, but he doesn’t recall why he did. He then explains that he wasn’t sure if she still liked him and explained how she gave him the little cactus after the two of them separated. Trysdale did not know how to speak the native language of which the cactus came from so he never knew the meaning. So, he asked the captain what the meaning of the cactus was, and he said that it meant “come and take me” So, trysdale could have gotten his girl back, but he did not know the meaning of the cactus so he never knew that she wanted to be with him still, and as a result trysdale lost the love of his life and his lesson learned was that he should of looked into the name more when he received it. The cactus is about two men and a woman and a cactus. the main character, Trysdale is sitting in an apartment all by himself with a tiny little cactus on the window sill. the man looks at the cactus and wonders why it is there, then leaves. Trysdale then goes to a wedding ceremony where he sees his ex girlfriend who is getting married and gets upset. Trysdale then goes and talks to another man named captain carruthers asks trysdale about the cactus and what he knows about it. Trysdale responds by saying he doesn't and ask if he does. Captain then says The native name means "come and take me" which was given to him by the girl.
The story i read was the haunted island and the allusion i found said "The loneliness made its self unpleasant. It seemed all though the darkness came up at once its allotting to the scariness of the dark." what the author meant by this was that it was really dark and scary at the island and it slowly creeped up on him as it made him feel uncomfortable with himself because it was so dark and spooky. obviously the loneliness cant make itself feel unpleasant, because loneliness doesn't have feelings.which makes it a solid allusion and helpee the story become more interesting.
The character in babes in the jungle i will be describing is one of the bosses in the story, Klein. Klein wore a nice suit and walked with a cane because he was a rather heavy man. clearly the man has lots of money and is very wealthy as he can afford all the expensive paintings he buys. he is really cranky and wants everything to go his way, no matter what it is. an example of this would be when the group of men were talking about how they are going to buy their new painting and sell it to make more money. while the other men were talking Klein smashes his cane into the ground and starts yelling and swearing at the others, and telling them how he wants it done. Klein then continues to go on and on about everything that he is upset with and continues to yell and cuss out the men in the room. in the end, Klein ends up getting his way and getting the new painting just the way he wanted.
The theme of the story "the huntsmen" is that bad things will happen if you're impaired by drugs/alcohol . during the story Yegor, a German huntsmen is walking back to his hut when he sees a woman with a pasty white face, who stopped him and asked if he remembered who she was, and he said he didn't want to while she got very upset. then she began to ask him why he wont stay with her and that they're married and should be together. Yegor then explains to her that he was drunk and made a bad decision and that he doesn't want to be with her at all and just wants to be alone. Then he proceeded to tell her that he doesn't want to hit her again and abuse her like before when they were staying together (which he did when we was drunk). Yegor then walks away from her as she sobs her eyes out and never looks back as he leaves his wife yet again.
The short story "the cripple" starts off with a man sitting in a train all by himself when a man with no feet and wooden pegs comes in and sits next to him. the two men then look at each other briefly as they think they know one another. after a brief silence the man with the pegs says that starring at each other isn't going to help them figure out who they are so they strike a conversation. come to find out the two men were in war together many years ago and the man with the pegs was the captain. the two men then talk some more about the war and how their lives have been 12 years or so after wards. The captain ended up losing his wife after he lost his legs because she didn't want her to suffer and have to sacrifice because of his disabilities. The train then stops and the man gets out, and walks away with his ex wife and her new husband and their kids, holding the little girl and boys hands while they walk away.
